take as much time as you need....don't worry about putting a time limit on it. no one can tell you when you will feel better.

Why don't you ask your advisor? He or she will give you a definite deadline.
I'd say though that as long as it's in by the terminal date for your MA, you should be OK, as long as your advisor is getting drafts and being able to see progress towards it in the meantime...
OAN: Your MA Thesis is only 5k words???? That seems way short for a MA Lit. Thesis (20pp approx.)
You need to talk to the professor involved. This is not a question we can answer. We can't read that professor's mind.
But my sympathies on the loss of your mother.
