What are the genotypes of the parent plants?

Two purple-flowered plants are crossed. The offspring are one-half purple and one-half white. It's a case of complementary genes, so only the plant that has both A and B genes is purple: AaBb, AABb, etc. This should be simple, but I can't get a 50-50 ratio no matter what. Help? What are the genotypes of the parent plants?
The best that i can get with the information provided is crossing AaBb with another AaBb. This will provide 9/16 purple flowers and 7/16 white flowers. Is there something missing from the information that you provided in your question? What are the genotypes of the parent plants?
just a wild guess but would it be Ab and Ab? -sorry if it's wrong-
